If you finish and are bored, check out some interesting info about the US Census and your family's last name.

Video Notes & Seminar Preparation
You picked up a handout explaining the Seminar procedure, which we went over as a class. On Wednesday, we watched a video,
"From One Second to the Next." You took notes
AFTER watching each of the four segments. Today, I'd like you to take out a sheet of paper and write your response to ALL 4 questions below:
1.
Which story from the
documentary struck you the hardest? As always, explain why!
2.
Did this week's topic
change your beliefs or actions? Again, as always, explain why/why not!
3.
How do you think we, as
a society, could cut back on distracted driving (especially texting)?
4.
Do you have any thoughts
about this week's topic that you'd like to add/share with us?
AFTER doing this, share your notes and have a brief discussion with your table peers. Before the end of class, please
use your notes to complete the survey, from which we'll gather questions for
Wednesday's Seminar. KEEP YOUR NOTES!!!
If you have time, read about the video at the following sites (and follow some of the links within to dig deeper):

Next Monday, we'll watch another video (this one is
more fun) from the "Test Your Brain" series.
On Tuesday, you will
have some roundtable time to work on anything - the tutors will be out visiting
classes.
On Wednesday, we'll have
a seminar discussion on texting, distractions, and the myth of (something).
On Thursday, you will
have tutors available to help with math (and any late Organization checks).
On Friday, our last day
before a 17-day break, you'll complete the Seminar Reflection.

From One Second to the Next
We watched a Public Service Announcement from AT&T. Usually, a PSA is the same length of a traditional commercial. Broadcast stations (TV & radio) are required to broadcast a certain # of PSAs for free each month. They are usually about being a smart consumer, being aware of services offered to those in need, and often about safety issues. The one we watched is MUCH LOOOOOOOONGER, like a short film. This is beause the director is also a film director. Powerful stuff...oh, and have some tissues ready to wipe away the tears:

Q1 Grade Report
Please complete the Q1 four-core Grade Report for future AVID@WHS data analysis. Please be honest. We use this data to make changes to our program and use as evidence for the growth of student achievement. By falsely reporting your grade, it just messes up the data, which threatens the program. Thank You!

Email a Teacher
You will have to write an email to a teacher you had last year (preferably your AVID 8 teacher). You must also "bcc" (blind carbon copy = your teacher will NOT see my email) me, so I can read what you wrote. You MUST read through the wikihow article linked here (http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Formal-Email). Then, compose your own email. Mention what you have done so far this year, how things may be different, and how the person to whom you are writing helped you become a better student (and person) overall. Follow up with a question - more specific than "how are things going for you?" - ask if s/he still does something interesting you liked, what the current classes are like, or something else...but it must be specific. When you are done, send it! Then finish your Mandala essay, which must be done when you come in to class on Monday (you'll submit it via turnitin in class).

Gradebook Portal Check
Read the directions FIRST! You will check the gradebook portal to record your current grade & number of missing assignments for this week's Report & Reflect.
You will need to get your grade & number of missing assignments (indicated with the RED shade & letter M for your score) for ALL 7 of your classes:
You will need to have more than one tab open to switch back-and-forth between your portal record and the AVID Report & Reflect 1.4 Google From. To open a new tab, you need to use the right mouse button (right-click). On a Chromebook, you use two fingers to press down on the trackpad (while hovering the cursor over the link). On a Mac, I have no idea (sorry!).
If you do not know how to check the gradebook portal, you can go to the washburn web site - select Students - then Portal for Grades....or click THIS LINK (http://sisportal.mpls.k12.mn.us/http://sisportal.mpls.k12.mn.us/)
